How often should I have my septic tank pumped?
Most septic tanks should be pumped every 3 to 5 years, depending on household size and usage. A family of four with a 1,000-gallon tank typically needs pumping every 3–4 years. Waiting too long causes solids to overflow into the drain field — and that's where things get expensive. When in doubt, have it inspected and we'll tell you where you stand.
What are the signs that my septic system is failing?
Common warning signs include: slow drains throughout the house, gurgling sounds in pipes or toilets, sewage odors inside or outside, wet or soggy areas over the drain field, unusually lush green grass over the septic area, or sewage backing up into toilets and drains. If you're seeing any of these, call us — the sooner you address it, the less expensive the fix.
Do I need a septic inspection when buying a home in Northwest Arkansas?
Yes — and it's strongly recommended even when not technically required. Many FHA, VA, and USDA loans require a septic inspection before closing. Even for conventional loans, a septic inspection protects you from inheriting a problem that could cost thousands to fix. NWA Septics provides fast real estate septic inspections across Benton and Washington County — including Rogers, Bentonville, Fayetteville, and Springdale.
How long does a septic system last?
A properly installed and maintained septic system can last 25 to 40 years or more. The drain field is typically the component with the shorter lifespan — around 20 to 30 years depending on soil conditions, usage, and maintenance history. Regular inspections and pumping are the best way to maximize system life.
How much does it cost to install a new septic system in Arkansas?
Septic system installation in Northwest Arkansas typically ranges from $8,000 to $20,000+ depending on system type, lot conditions, soil percolation results, and local permitting requirements. Conventional gravity systems are generally less expensive. Aerobic treatment units, mound systems, or drip systems cost more due to additional components. Can I use a garbage disposal with a septic system?
You can, but it's not ideal. Garbage disposals significantly increase the solids entering your tank, which can require more frequent pumping and accelerate drain field wear. If you use one, plan to pump your tank more often and keep an eye on system performance. When possible, composting is a better alternative for septic-system homes.
What should I never flush or put down the drain with a septic system?
Never flush wipes (even "flushable" ones), feminine hygiene products, paper towels, medications, cooking grease, paint, large amounts of bleach or harsh chemicals, or any non-biodegradable materials. These disrupt the bacterial balance in your tank or physically clog your drain field. Stick to toilet paper and human waste only.
How do I find my septic tank?
Your septic tank is typically located 10 to 25 feet from the house, in the direction the main sewer line exits the foundation. You can contact your county health department for a copy of the original septic permit, which should include a site diagram. NWA Septics can also locate your system during any service or inspection visit.
Is it safe to plant a garden over my drain field?
Shallow-rooted grass and wildflowers are fine over a drain field. Avoid trees, large shrubs, or vegetable gardens — roots can infiltrate and damage lateral lines, and food crops should not be grown in soil that may contact effluent. Keep vehicles, heavy equipment, and structures off the drain field area entirely.
What permits are required for a new septic system in Arkansas?
NWA Septics coordinates with the county process — a county rep handles the site evaluation and a designer determines the system specs. Andrew then figures materials, provides the estimate, and handles the installation.
